
Make with MAC
In this online workshop, artist Roz Wren will guide you through making a wall hanging using recycled materials and homemade dyes.
Recommended for ages 3–8 (with some help from parents)
You will need:
- an old T-shirt
- scissors
- a stick or disposable chopstick
- some string
- 2–3 bowls
- a spoon or folk
- 2–3 homemade fabric dyes, or more if you like (see different recipe options below)
Homemade Dye Recipes
Food colouring dyes
- 1 cup cold water
- 1 tsp food colouring
Use more colouring for a darker colour, or less for paler colours
Yellow dye
- 1/2 cup hot water
- 1 teaspoon turmeric
Be careful, this stains everything!
Brown dye
- 4 teabags
- 1 cup boiling water
Place tea bags in a bowl and pour on boiling water (ask an adult to do this). Leave to soak for 10 minutes.
Pale purple dye
- 1 cup dried black beans (also known as turtle beans)
- 2 cups boiling water
Place beans in a bowl and pour on boiling water (ask an adult to do this).
Leave to soak for 30 minutes at least.
