You will need:
  • an old T-shirt
  • scissors
  • a stick or disposable chopstick
  • some string
  • 2–3 bowls
  • a spoon or folk
  • 2–3 homemade fabric dyes, or more if you like (see different recipe options below)
Homemade Dye Recipes

Food colouring dyes

  • 1 cup cold water
  • 1 tsp food colouring

Use more colouring for a darker colour, or less for paler colours

Yellow dye

  • 1/2 cup hot water
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric

Be careful, this stains everything!

Brown dye

  • 4 teabags
  • 1 cup boiling water

Place tea bags in a bowl and pour on boiling water (ask an adult to do this). Leave to soak for 10 minutes.

Pale purple dye

  • 1 cup dried black beans (also known as turtle beans)
  • 2 cups boiling water

Place beans in a bowl and pour on boiling water (ask an adult to do this).

Leave to soak for 30 minutes at least.
