Moonah Taste of the World ONLINE

Glenorchy City Council is proud to present Moonah Taste of the World Online – a series of short films depicting the colour and culture of the festival.

Moonah Taste of the World Festival is Southern Tasmania’s most popular multicultural festival, with thousands attending the event each year in March. 2020 saw many events cancelled and Glenorchy City Council made the difficult decision to postpone the 10th anniversary of Moonah Taste of the World Festival. Instead, we invite you to experience Moonah Taste of the World Online!

Introducing: Beat Latina

“Beat Latina is a dance and music project, exploring the influence of African Culture on the traditional and modern Latin-American rhythms and dances. We practice Afro-Latin rhythms such as Cumbia, Cueca Chora, Samba and Mapale; and other modern styles like Reggaeton or Passinho.

I refer to Moonah Taste of The World as the “the festival of the ghettos”, because it gives to multicultural groups of Hobart the opportunity to manifest and show their cultural process into their own communities and beyond. It is an opportunity to share who we are, through different cultural processes such as songs, choreographies or new food recipes. This is shared with our families, friends, neighbors and now with the whole world through this film.

These types of festivals, are tremendously important because they recreate the rhythm of our own rituals and ceremonies back home, such as the Rio Carnival in Brazil or the Tirana Carnival in Chile, which also happen once a year. The preparation of an art work is the best excuse to get together and create community, and especially now tribe is the key to stay well in this crazy times.” – Alejandra Osorio, Beat Latina
